Last year a Hawera man was sentenced to his 55th term of imprisonment.

This most recent time after being found in possession of a stolen shotgun.

Joel Jonothan Broughton pleaded guilty to charges of speaks threateningly, receiving, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and breaching a protection order.

That stolen shotgun had been sawn off by the way.

What did he get?

20 months jail.

He will serve less of course.

Despite the gang-affiliated Broughton having a 15 page long rap sheet.

The judge said that this criminal list also included two previous convictions for possessing firearms, in 2009 and 2011 respectively.

So this is his third time caught with an illegal gun.

Oh and the joke judge remitted his outstanding fines of $2364.

Again, the only reason that criminals use guns is because we let them.

If the worst that an offender can expect for an illegally owned, stolen, criminally modified firearm, after a history of the same, with other crimes surrounding that offence, with gang connections, with a history of offending numbering higher than the runs that most cricketers dream of scoring – is a year in jail….. What message does that send?
