How the Police Vet Shooters

One of our readers has just had his firearms licence revoked.

He was vetted and approved to possess firearms. Then granted a license.

The Police apparently had no issue with his minor previous criminal record. Despite him stressing these historical issues during the interview process.

Then, without any inciting incident, the Police simply changed their mind and seized his guns.

He is taking them to court and we will follow the case with interest.

There are really only two options.

One: The Police gave a dangerous criminal guns – despite being aware of their record.

Two: The Police did not find the previous issues of concern and are violating the rights of a NOW responsible firearm owner.

Either way – not a good look.

The Kiwi gun blog now have the actual guide and forms used by the Police for their vetting process. These are available here for your interest:

‘Number 13’ is noteworthy.

The Police have only just told us that they dont record ‘A’ Category arms. Yet here below is the paperwork to do just that.

Obviously shooters knew this to be a lie from anecdotal evidence and our own experiences – But to see Police deny what is literally printed evidence is just embarrassing. What contempt.

The Police Minister has also been told that the ‘Volunteering’ of such data is quite standard.

It isn’t – so don’t.

UPDATE

We have just heard that the reader involved in this case has now had their license and firearms returned.

It pays to stand up to the Police when they abuse their power.

He achieved this result with just a little legal advice and a lot of determination.

  1. Master Guide pdf has numbering jumping from 10 to 12 and 12 to 14 — no 11, no 13. But there’s no obvious signs of photoshop on this scanned paper copy.
Section 10 Security correctly references Regulation 19 as covering security, but misses that the requirements thereinunder are binding on the applicant, NOT the vetting officer; so this form is a little in excess of the Arms Act..
Section 12 is just a beautiful piece of work.

Moving to the firearms vetting guide .pdf
Section 11 Applicant, I see no questions for “do you have any overseas convictions?”, “are you a gang member?” (some of the other sections do mention gang membership, but the Applicant section does not)
Section 12 count of firearms… Sure, right.
And Section 13, the confiscation checklist, you correctly noted in the body of the article!

All in all, an engrossing read. 3/10, would recommend to others.

  2. Totally disgusting behavior. If only we had police for the police, they need it as they seem to be breaking the law regularly.

  4. This doesn’t make sense, you are vetting a person for a FAL therefore they won’t have any firearms to list ???

I have just gone thru the vetting process for my e cat, was interesting that the vetter only wanted to see my e cat safe, I asked him if he wanted to see my A cat security and he said no. He made no attempt to get a list of my firearms

    1. Same mate. I get vetted regularly for my endorsed Firearms. That’s all I show them with my paperwork and they never ask about anything else.

      1. Same. Renewed last year. Checked Security and endorsed Firearms. Didn’t ask for A-Cat serials or how many or anything like that but we have a really good arms officer and vetters. Just lucky or they know their jobs who knows.

  5. I had an AO once note down I had an A-Cat AR15 during a phone conversation about importing some parts. I asked for it to be removed from file as I didnt want A-Cat info recorded (for my own security)….basically was yelled at and told they had a right to record whatever they wanted to manage my firearms account. …anger issues much ?
