Police Like to Shoot Their Roof

The Kiwi Gun Blog has had several readers share anecdotes of the NZ Police being told that they can no longer use shooting ranges due to their incompetence and dangerous handling of arms. Often resulting in damaged equipment.

So we asked the Police if this was indeed the case.

In a response received today, Inspector David Rose denied this.

tttttttt

Well then…. It appears as though several shooters, at several ranges, imagined this.

The Inspector attached a range report from the Police College that DOES detail significant bullet damage where there should be none.

Both the walls and roof had been shot up “Considerably”.

The report goes on to detail a very lax management of the range. This from the people who are required to sign off on civilian ranges.

But of more concern is the appalling training standards on show.

Would you want these new shooters gunfighting near you?

Do you have a story of our Police being denied access to your range for safety reasons?

  4. Pistol NZ Range Inspectors certify ranges and these are signed off on behalf of the Police Commissioner I believe. All Pistol Ranges have to be signed of by the Commissioner as part of the agreement to shoot Pistols in NZ. PNZ can clarify more fully.

  5. The entire edifice of Pistol use on ranges in New Zealand is only supported by very little in legislation.

    Arms Act 1983
S29 (2) Any person, being an applicant for a firearms licence or a holder of a firearms licence, may apply at an Arms Office to a member of the Police for an endorsement permitting that person to have possession of a pistol or a restricted weapon (other than an anti-personnel mine or a cluster munition) in his capacity as—
    (a) a member of an incorporated pistol shooting club for the time being recognised by the Commissioner for the purposes of this section; or

That and the section outlining a good defence as using a pistol under immediate supervision at a Pistol Club are about it.

The rest has grown like Topsy …
