The true cost of a gun buyback

The Prime Minister has announced her intentions to seize every semi automatic rifle in the nation. With some token exemptions for professional pest controllers.

No discussion. Just a compelled buy back with a budget of 100 – 200 million dollars.

Her finance minister says that money is no option.

But just how accurate are her guesstimates?

Everyone that we have spoken to is sure that this government is out by three billion dollars!

Here is the true cost of a gun buyback

MSSA rifles

We know that there are around 15,000 of these registered with Police now.

A VERY conservative average for these arms would be $2,300 per rifle.

The total cost of a buy back for the BARE MSSA FIREARMS would be $34,500,000

IT IS LIKELY MUCH MORE THAN THIS FIGURE

Next we have the issue of aftermarket parts specific to the privately owned firearm being seized. These investments can include optics, suppressors, muzzle breaks and stock systems.

This could EASILY DOUBLE the cost of the individual rifle taken.

This excludes gunsmithing and custom work that represents millions in additional losses.

This excludes general accessories. Magazines and pouches for competition, cases, etc. Easily millions more. Easily.

Investments in security can only be shuddered at.

‘A’ Category Semi-Automatic Rifles

The semi auto firearm is the most common sold today. Even a shotgun limited to two rounds will often be a semi auto for the benefit of recoil reduction.

These ‘A’ category rifles and shotguns have now been reclassified as MSSA. A VERY conservative estimate would be 250,000 of these in the hands of licensed shooters.

A VERY conservative average cost would be $2,000 each.

The total cost of a buy back for the BARE FIREARMS would be $500,000,000

IT IS LIKELY MUCH MORE THAN THIS FIGURE

Again, these firearms will have additional accessories that can EASILY DOUBLE the cost of the individual rifle taken.

Pump Action Shotguns

Shotguns capable of holding more than five rounds are also to be seized. We estimate that shotguns with tubes that either hold six rounds, or can be adapted to do so with a simple screw on part, number 200,000.

At a VERY conservative averaged value of $950.

The total cost of a buy back for the BARE shotguns would be $190,000,000

IT IS LIKELY MUCH MORE THAN THIS FIGURE

Total Cost

So the total cost of a buy back for the firearms that the Prime Minister has ordered would be $724,500,000

IT IS LIKELY MUCH MORE THAN THIS FIGURE

This figure doubles if shooters are compensated for their other property, now rendered valueless by the seizures.

That is a billion dollars IF you steal a billion dollars.

Additional Costs

None of this takes into account the cost of seizing, storing, transporting, securing and destroying all of these investments. Police are already contracting private firms just to NOT answer questions on their firearm hotline.

None of this takes into account the cost of a registration system – should that be adopted. This will be in the hundreds of millions and will be an ONGOING expense. We know from Australia.

None of this takes into account private investments in security, reloading equipment and components, ammunition, multiple ‘Uppers’ for the same firearm, etc.

Note: If the system is expanded to include .22 rifles that can accept larger capacity magazines – as is usually done – then the cost would be terrifying. Certainly hundreds of millions of dollars in additional waste.

Unintended consequences

The unintended consequences can only be imagined.

From the film industry losing hundreds of millions because our armorers can’t provide the guns needed.

Undertrained Police can no longer use private rifles to up skill.

More poison will need to be paid for to destroy our environment.

Shops close. Ranges close.

The loss of freedom and culture and sport is of course Priceless.

The loss of social connection so many thousands of kiwis will feel now their sport is stolen. No more world champions. A few more suicides.

The lives lost from opportunity cost. This money, if invested in our health service, would save thousands of lives.

But we set fire to all of this because a SINGLE madman killed 50 people with guns in revenge for another madman killing 87 people with a truck.

So this farce will cost a billion dollars….

IF you steal a billion dollars….

BEFORE an additional billion dollars

(For the establishment of a useless system. Before that gets dropped as useless in ten years)

But Jacinda is budgeting for 100 million.

Being looking at moving the manufacturing for Tasman Research (many more projects in development) to Australia, also the home of the pavlova and russle crow, as draconian as Australian firearms law is, at least it’s a possibility.

  2. A few days ago I heard the Prime Minister described as a “headline whore”, or in simplified explanation, she’s always looking for headline grab or photo opportunity in the media.

In real terms, I believe Mike has nailed our Prime Minister once again, as clearly she makes big announcents before stopping to consider financial, social or practical implications.

If the Australian buyback model is followed, I’d suggest $1 Billion is a somewhat conservative estimate.

When we handed in our handguns larger than .38 calibre during buyback, we were paid for the handgun, magazines, belt & holsters, optics, spare parts, reloading dies and the list went on and on.

This Prime Minister has opened a financial Pandora’s box, but hey, she’s probably just following the long standing Labour tradition of…..”no worries, it’s only money, we’ll just just borrow more”

  3. Not to mention the Social ‘cost’ in destroyed friendships and support networks.

Nor the inevitable suicides which follow humiliating repression …

or the ongoing political costs as UTU is exacted over many, many years

  5. I feel like I’m in a bad dream.
I’m aware of who the PM is although I don’t accept her as my PM.
    Although always a National supporter,
I have no confidence in what Simon says.
We seem to be living in a dictatorship run by kids not long out of school.
What ever happened to the good kiwi bloke who was able to hunt and gather to provide for his family?

    1. Don’t feel too despondent Paul, many of us thought the Nationals may have a calmer more rational approach to this debate also.

I wrote letters to Mr Bridges, and another National’s member, with neither having the courtesy to acknowledge the correspondence, let alone actually take the time to reply.

Can’t wait for them to call nearer the next election asking me for a donation again. The poor caller will get to learn some new words about my views on the Nationals.

Our Prime Minister called Mr Bridges “simple Simon” recently, its about the only thing she’s ever said I agree with.

Mr Bridges, politically speaking, is a dead man walking. I don’t expect he’ll last another 6 months as opposition leader.

  6. Hey Mike, just found your next topic to talk about. Even after admitting they have illegal firearms what will the police do now? If anyone feels like getting angry, read this..

  8. so the mongrel mob wont give up their guns ( the ones used to defend their drug business) but we are expected to?
as for the hand in now and we will give you $ later, who do they think they are kidding. unless there is a checkbook and an agreed price at time of hand in they are bloody dreaming. average AR is between 2K-5K plus optics, nods, mags, ammo, hell even a 1/2 decent bipod is $300.
and will it affect crime and terrorism, not one iota.

  9. I watched Winston Peters media brief when he stated the gangs would be handing in their guns because, ‘it was the law’. Really. Move over Seinfeld, there’s another comedy act in town ably assisted by our melodramatic media. I mean, why report the truth when over the top hysterical reporting sells more papers.

I suppose people have noticed the withdrawal of certain television programs after the Christchurch tragedy. But did you know the cartoon program The Simpsons had a warning before the show that warned of gun use. Unbelievable. It’s a cartoon program. It’s not real. How much more of this PC nonsense will we be forced to endure?

  10. Shooters and firearms enthusiasts need to form our own political party. I believe Australia has done this. Call it the “Outdoors Recreation” party or similar. Imagine getting this off the ground and being in the position Winnie was last election. My only regret is that I am a terrible public speaker. Surely there is some one out there in the firearms community who can kick this off. Even if it costs enthusiasts a grand each which I’d be willing to pay. The only way to get fair treatment is to have our own representation and not rely on airheads, losers, and hasbeens.

    1. Outdoors & Recreation will just scream “Hunters \ Gun Owners” needs to be something that can sell to the masses, is distanced from Australia approach.

Why limit ourselves to 250,000 LFAO when we could potentially appeal to a wider enlightened part of society…the ones the Libtards havent brainwashed.

Id go on facts and holding to account National, Labour, Greens and NZ Police on a bunch of cock ups (there are plenty).

Which would make the party something like

      – Accountability in Government Party (AGP)
      – New Zealand Democracy Party (NZDP)

Somewhere along those line, mainstream but not too mainstream. We need to shake up this house !
